Small House 24"x25" framed batik
It's the size of house you could live in if the neighbors were far from view and the weather was so nice you were outside most of the time. This piece is immersion dyed: between each wax application the whole piece was immersed in dye, so every part not covered with wax receives the dye. Blue was the first color, then yellow dye changed the exposed blue to green. Red turned the green to brown. Most of the wax has been removed by ironing. It is matted with burlap and pieces of vintage-looking (but new)cotton fabric using big stitches of cotton embroidery floss for a Primitive Folk Art look.

Batik is a process of fabric dyeing that uses wax to resist the activity of dye. I dye and wax in many steps. The wax is applied when melted, but cools and can crack, allowing dye to seep into the cracks. Because the wax obscures the fabric, the final appearance of the piece after wax removal is often surprising.
All of my batiks come from a smoke free home with Cat Patrol.
