The name of this house comes from the border, which is a batik rendition of the traditional block element that quilters use. When half-square triangles are put in a row, we call them Dog Teeth. They are often one of the first thing quilters learn to make. That's what you see on the right hand side of the house. These patters are not pieced in different fabrics, but dyed into a single piece of fabric. The batiked fabric is cotton, mounted on cotton ticking, matted with cotton prints and cotton floss.
Batik is a process of fabric dyeing that uses wax to resist the activity of dye. I dye and wax in many steps. The wax is applied when melted, but cools and can crack, allowing dye to seep into the cracks. Because the wax obscures the fabric, the final appearance of the piece after wax removal is often surprising.
All of my batiks come from a smoke free home with Cat Patrol.
